Article Stirs Finn Skippers To Action
CANTERBURY Olympic Finn yachtsmen will practise this week-end on the open see with the object of gaining experience in conditions likely to be met in next year’s New Zealand trials for the Tokyo Games The commodore of the Christchurch Yacht Club (Mr F. G. B. Simpson) intends to lay a three-mile triangular course off Sumner Bay for use by Finn skippers on Sunday afternoon, weather permitting. Mr Simpson said yesterday that the Christchurch club was not conducting the event officially; it was a personal gesture on his own part and the club would not be bearing any respon-
sibility for control or rescue services. The move to race on Sumner Bay came Canterbury skippers had been soundly beaten by ■ Aucklanders in open-sea conditions at Nelson last month and an article in ‘ ‘The Press” had pointed out they had failed to gain experience in similar conditions by accepting an offer for open-sea racing made by Mr Simpson at the beginning of the summer. Finn skippers approached Mr Simpson at the Akaroa regatta and requested him to arrange the practise It will be the first time in many years that centreboard yachts have raced over the Sumner Bar.
