SCRIPTURE IN SCHOOLS

Bishop Commends Legislation (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, March 12. The recent legislation whereby school teachers could also conduct scripture lessons was “a great step forward," the Anglican BuMop of Auckland (the Rt. Rev. E. A. Gowing) said today. "We believe that nothing but good can come from it," he said, at the annual commissioning service of Bible-in-schools teachers in the Pitt street Methodist Church. "I find it very difficult to understand the attitude of the Education Institute. “I understand they stand for the freedom of teachers. "There is no compulsion on any teacher to teach Scripture in schools, but the legislation makes it possible ter them to do so if they wish.”
