ADDINGTON MARKET Molesworth Cattle Average Almost £34
The feature of the market at Addington yesterday was the sale of the annual draft of twu-and-a-half-year-old and three-and-a-haif-year-old steers from the Lands and Survey Department’s Molesworth station. The line of 1023 was considered to be the best ever sent in by the station, and it met a keen sale. The line averaged just under £34, which was a slight increase on last year’s realisation, and the top price was £44 3s 6d for a pen of Aberdeen Angus-Hereford cross. Two-tooth ewes met a particularly good sale, with Romneys selling to £5 8s and fine wools ranging to 795. Values could generally be described as firmer. For a yarding of older ewes of mixed quality the sale opened with values similar to late rates, but it slackened later. Store lambs met another sound sale, but there were fewer top-quality pens and more small carry-over sorts in the offering. \ Shorn lambs met a very sound sale.
The ottering totalled 18,978 head, compared with 21,870 last week and included 58»!4 store lambs (7180 last week), 3666 two-tooth ewes (3489), 8784 older ewes (10,979) and 704 wethers (212). , STORE LAMBS The store lamb entry was smaller than last week and the overall quality was not as good. There were fewer pens of forward condition woolly wether lambs wtitah have been in demand in recent weeks for shearing and carrying over and a big proportion of the entry was made up of small carryover lambs. There were also many more shorn lambs. The wether lamb market was fully firm on last week’s sound values, in spite of a further drop in the schedule, and there was a sustained demand with good competition from a fairly big gallery which was bigger than last week. Shorn wether lamibs met a very sound sale, particularly for medium finewools. The best of the fine-wool wether lambs made from 40s to 44s 6d, with good at 36s to 39s 6d. average at 31s to 35s and others at 20s 6d to 295. The sale opened on a firm note and continued'without flagging at any stage. The medium condition steers seemed to meet the strongest competition, particularly in the Hereford section, where values looked to be relatively dearer than on the top pens. The line of 1023 two and ahaif and three and a half-year-old steers sold in a little over an hour for a total realisation of £34,732 5s 6d and the average price was £33 19s, compared with £33 15s for the 964 steers sold last year. The 525 Aberdeen AngusHereford cross steers. made from £3l 13s 6d to the top price for the sale of £44 3s 6d and averaged £34 9s 6d.
