Five Denominations Plan Receptions
The major churches in Christchurch are making big efforts this year to help stufients living away from home to find new friends. Four Protestant denominations will hold receptions next Sunday afternoon after the annual university servie* in the Christ's Coliege chapel, and Boman Catholics will hold one the following Sunday. The Diocesan Youth Council of the Church of England will hold in afternoon tea party at Bishopscourt Presbyterians will meet at the St. Andrew’s Church lounge for an official welcome and introductions. Methodists will discuss “acclimatisation” at the Durham Street Church, with Mr W. R. Hawkey talking about .“The Christian and the University." Baptists will have a reception at Gainsford House, the new youth centre behind the Oxford Terrace Baptist Church.
Students of all four denominations will meet clergy, university staff members, and senior students of their own church as well as fellow “fresherg.” Earlier in the afternoon they will hear the university chaplain (the Rev. D. R. Wilson) conduct the orientation week service.
Roman Catholic students will attend Mass at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament on March 17 and a reception afterwards at Maryknoll.
