Native Bats

Sir,— I have read in “The Press* • how the rare native bat has been seen in the North Island bush. While camping in the Doubtful riverbed just above its junction with the Lewis river in North Canterbury, I saw several of these bats on different evenings, just at dusk, catching insects. They are very quick on the wing, swooping round in the air like a fantail but very much faster. They were always seen on top of a terrace on the edge of the bush in a sheltered place. There could quite possibly be more of these to be found in other parts of this vast area of bush.—Yours, etc., NOT SO RARE. March 5, 1963.
