Average Two-Tooth Ewes Sell Well

Average to good Romney two-tooth ewes sold strongly at the Oxford ewe fair yesterday at firm rates, but the top class of sheep did not quite earn the premium that has been paid at recent Romney fairs. A feature of the sale was the generally high standard of the young ewes which reflected great credit on the district

Older ewes did not reach the high levels recorded for fine wools at Culverden and for Romneys at Methven last week, but they still showed a very marked advance on last year’s fair.

The offering totalled 16,574 compared with 15,536 last year and included 1721 ewe and wether lambs (2894 last year), 5508 two-tooth ewes <5OlB last year), 9102 older ewes (7390) and 243 wethers (234). The offering of two-tooths was a feature of the sale containing pen after pen of excellent well-grown sheep. For the top Romneys, which •were probably the equal of anything seen at the round of Romney fairs, the sale was a little disappointing with buyers apparently having limits beyond which they ■w ould not go. Top price was 95s compared with 86s last year, but the market was strong for the medium to good sort of sheep and they •were traded extensively around the 77s to 86s mark. The pick of the Romneys made from 89s to 955, with good at 80s to 89s, average 72s to 77s and others from 60s to 655. Young fine wool ewes, of which some very good sheep were yarded, did not seem to sell quite as well as at recent fine wool sales with the best Corriedales making from 74s to 79s fid, good 67s to 72s and others from 59s to 655, with the pick of the halfbreds at 70s to 755, good sorts at 60s to 68s and others at 40s to 58s. Notable Gain But overall the two-tooth sale showed a notable improvement on last year’s sale and in odd .cases vendors showed a gain on last year of as much as 30s and improvements of 20s and more were fairly common. Over a selection of 18 pens sold yesterday and 16 pens of the same farmers’ sheep sold last year there was an average advance yesterday of 26s and this would be as good a rise as has been recorded at any fair yet for younger ewes. Reflecting the better feed conditions that have been enjoyed in the district in the last season the older ewes also came forward in better condition this year and while they sold at a marked Improvement on last year fine wools were probably 3s or 4s lower than at the strong Culverden sale last week and Romneys did not make as high values as at Methven last Friday. Compared with last year 13 pens of four-year-olds were about 12s to 13s dearer on average than 10 pens sold by the same vendors last year and seven pens of five-year-olds •bowed a rise of about Ils on eight pens sold last year. Best four-year-old Romnev ewes sold from 50s 6d to 635. with good early shorn ewes making to about 51s 6d and average 41s to 48s. Best early shorn fine wool sheep in this age group ranged from 52s to 555. with average at 43s to 48s. and among the later shorn entries the best brought from 46s to 49s with average at 38s to 445.

In the five-year-old section best early shorn Romneys made to 48s with average from Ms to 38s. with late shorn at 30s to 355. and best early shorn fine wools made from 46s to 48s with average to good at 43s to 455. and the pick of the late shorn at 40s to 42s 6d with average ■at Ms to 36s and others at Ms to 29s Among four and five-year-old ewes and ewes of unspecified age Romneys sold from 36s to 475, with late shorn down to 345. and early shorn fine wool ewes made from 46s to 47s with late shorn at 38s to 465. Top Prices Romneys from M. Spencer Bower (Claxby) topped the two-tooth market with 89 selling at 95a. The same vendor had other pens of 140 at 945, 10 at 91s and 80 at 80s. C. C.
