Interlaken Wins Main Omoto Event

GREYMOUTH Feb. 24. Visiting horses won the double on the second day of the Greymouth Jockey Club’s autumn meeting at Omoto. Interlaken won the T. E. Coates Memorial Handicap and Queen of Sheba landed the Progress Handicap. Interlaken, one of the lesser fancied candidates in the Coates Memorial the first leg, is a five-year-old brown gelding by Treasure Hunt from Lilli Marlene, owned by Mrs E R. Simmons and trained for her at Washdyke by M. R. Jones.
Queen of Sheba Is a five-year-old brown mare by Treasure Hunt from Subtraction, owned and trained bv Mr J. Lalor at Reefton.
The double for £1 paid £99 12s.
Interlaken paid an excellent dividend in the first leg after his third in the corresponding event on the opening day. Queen of Sheba was the outsider in tlie second leg. The on-course double on the Cobden Handicap and the Trial Stakes was won by Scrabbler and Bandashah. The former is from Ashburton and the latter from Orari The dividend was £8 13s for £l. There was a much larger attendance than on the first day. The on-course total turnover for the meeting was £15,681. compared with £22,243 last year.
After the field had settled down in the T. E. Coates Memorial Payout was the leader from Come On Bov. Anahita. Ashleigh. Golden Howe. Red Jimmy. Interlaken and Master Conclusion.
Anahita put a break of five lengths on the field going down the back but Ashleigh had caught her with less than two furlongs to go Anahita held her lead into the straight with Ashleigh, Interlaken and Payout showing up. Interlaken did best in the run to the judge to win easily by two lengths from Payout, w-ith a head to Ashleigh. Anahita was fourth half a length back followed by Red Jimmy, Master Conclusion and Golden Howe.
Tocsin and Mary Tee ran together in front in the Progress Handicao. At the half-mile they were four lengths clear of Sheba, Gabelle. Hopeful and Slatey
Tocsin had charge rounding the home bend from Queen of Sheba. Gabelle and Mary Tee.
In her run down the straight Queen of Sheba drew away to win bv a length and a half from Tocsin. Gabelle was two length, awav third, with a ' similar gap to hopeful. Slatey was next, with the very hot favourite Mary Tee last. Results:—
