Grand Prix And The Budget "The Press" Special Service DUNEDIN, Feb. 24. Grand Prix, in the Allanton Hurdles, and The Budget, in the Valley Improvers’ Handicap, was the successful on-cotirse double combination at Wingatui on Saturday. Grand Prix was a hot favourite, but The Budget was at good odds and the combination pald £7B 9s 6d tor £l. It was a particularly good performance on the part of Grand Prix, which was having his first test as a jumper in the South Island. He had been placed in his two starts over hurdles in tlie North. Grand Prix jumped like a seasoned campaigner and his time of 3min Usee for the mile and three-quarters was only Isec outside the track record. The Budget, fourth at his previous start, was the ninth favourite and paid £2B 9s 6d Trained 'by his Woodland owners. A. G. and P. R. Dennis. The Budget is a half-brother by Underwood to the consistent galloper The Wanderer. In a total doubles pool of £1899 10s Grand Prix was the hot favourite with 1349 Ids tickets. The Budget carried 80 5s tickets. Grand Prix Leads Grand Prix and Hy soon drew clear in the Allanton Hurdles but when Hy fell near the six furlongs Grand Prix was left eight lengths clear of Ashaway. Mangus, which was checked by the falling Hy, was next ahead of Brianbra and Beau Revere.
Grand Prix was 12 lengths clear at the half-mile and never appeared like slackning the pace. He coasted home 15 lengths clear af Ashaway with three lengths and a half to the improving Mighty Fella. There were four lengths then to Mangus and a similar distance to Beau Revere ahead of Pyrites, which jumped poorly at the rear most of the way. . After leading practically throughout in the Valley Improvers', The Budget drew away to beat Janlea by half- a length. The Budget was soon efear and running to the five torlongs Jed Sattoette, Janlea, Lucky Streak and Persian Janlea followed Hie Budget Into the straight where ‘Hie Spy. Persian Light. Cardrona and Never Late were handy. The Budget continued a strong run to win well. Janlea held the fest finishing Cardrona by two lengths and a half with Never Late only a nose back. Crackle was three lengths beck fifth ahead of Persian Ught. Cornea. Gladaub, the favourite, Lightning Giri and Woodcock, Which along with WBm. Anouk and Bustop was stow away.
