MIRAGE JET FIGHTERS

Australia To Have 100

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) CANBERRA, Feb. 20. Australia has arranged an option to buy 40 additional Mirage jet fighters, the Air Minister (Mr David Fairbairn) announced today. The option, which had been arranged with the French firm of General Aeronautique Marcel Dassault, would enable Australia to buy under particularly favourable terms. It would bring the total Mirage aircraft order to 100 aircraft An initial order for 30 aircraft to be delivered late this year was announced in 1960. Later the Government ordered an additional 30. Most of these initial 60 were to be built in Australia. Mr Fairbairn told Reuter this would keep the two factories concerned in operation until 1967 or 1968.

He said two prototypes were being made in France, but the first Australian-pro-duced Mirages would actually be flying before the two prototypes became available.
