RACING Southland Pair Are Too Good At Wingatui

(From Our Own Reporter)

DUNEDIN, February 21.

Panther and Royal Crest, two six-year-olds from South* land, looked a class above their rivals in the Otago Handicap, first leg of the T.A.B. double at Wingatui today. They had a sustained battle from near the furlong and Panther won by a nose.

Panther’s win was not very surprising after a solid run for eighth, close up, in the Queen Elizabeth II Handicap at Riccarton last Saturday. Mr R. J. Gilbert’s Panair gelding was fourth favourite, but at good odds, paying £lO 3s to win.

Trained at Gore by R. J. Cochrane, Panther was ridden by the Oarrwu jockey, W. D. Skelton, who won this race on Windvale Lad last year. He carried 83811 tickets in a doubles pool of £42,566 10s.

Studio was first choice with 22,946 tickets and Barrister was next with 18,8844. Royal Crest was third favourite. The favourite Studio could beat only one In a 12horse field. He wa* beaten for the pacemaking role by Candida, and ran in a close contending position for a mile before dropping back through the field. Studio’* rider, C. T. Wilson, wa* not very hopeful after they went three furlongs. The Count Rendered gelding slipped about on a bad patch of ground near the five furlongs, and was unable to hold his position for much longer. A stronger representative for Riccarton was Gracefield’s Pride. She was third but in a gap of five lengths and only just beat Super Glen, which tired slightly dose to home after making a fast run to the front on the turn.

Grace field’* Pride was ridden well back in the field for a start, but was ahead of Royal Crest, which had only two behind him ait the five furlongs. Royal Crest started his big run near the half-mile, and Barrister tried to follow him. But backers of Barrister, the second favourite, lost interest after the Wingatui mare was forced very wide on the home turn. Barrister finished sixth, half a length behind Grand Prix, which had his chance.

The others looked well out of their depth. Startler was seventh in a gap of . four length* and Andalusia, the leader for a moment early in the race, was eighth. Becharre passed some tired horses for ninth, ahead of Sudd El Nil, Studio and Candida. Candida surrendered his lead in a few strides when Super Glen and Panther went (Hit after her on the home turn. Second Leg Royal Ettate, thia season’s Southland Guinea* winner, recorded his second open class win in the Autumn Handicap, second leg of the T AB. double. The PantherRoyal Estate double paid £5B for £l. This neat Castle Donnington oolt won against the open sprinters at Gore a week before he ran fifth in the mile Duke of Edinburgh Stake* at the Royal Riccarton meeting. Owned by Mr* H. G. McLeod, of Dunedin, and trained at Wingatui by A. N. Didham, Royal Estate wa* ridden by the trainer’s brother, E. J. Dldham.

Royal Estate ran at the girth of the pace-making Seaend to the home turn in the Autumn Handicap, ran clear on straightening up and won running away by three lengths. Flying Trix beat Seaend nearly as easily for second. Kumai and Hearty’s Pride drifted from the start, and The Wanderer, Seaend, Feieka, and Royal Estate were four of the quickest. Seaend, which had the inaide running, took a short lead from Royal Estate inside the flrat two furlongs and they came to the straight Just ahead of The Wanderer (rails) and Flying Trix. Royal Estate was master of the situation two furlongs out. Shaken up when Flying Trix got fairly close to him near the furtong, Royal Estate bounded away and won as he liked. - Flying Trix and Seaend were unchallenged for the second and third positions. The Wanderer kept plugging away down on the inside for an honest fourth. Ravefeton made ground from the back for fifth, just ahead" of Kumai, another impressive finisher. Feieka was disap-
