SWIMMING Spreydon Wins Trophy After Race Re-swum
Competitors In the marathon Hollander Cup contest at the Canterbury Swimming Centre's all-relay carnival in the Wharenul Coronation pool last night expended a good deal of energy to no purpose. The event was declared “no race" by the referee (Mr E. C. Stentlford) after it had come to an unexplained halt with only 13 of the 15 lengths completed. The Wharenul team held a good lead for 12 lengths but in the thirteenth length a Spreydon swimmer made good the deficit and touched an inch or two ahead of his Wharenul rival. There, for reasons unknown. the race ended. Only one of the waiting swimmers jumped in for the fourteenth length, and promptly jumped out again. The "anchor leg" competitors—including Miss S. A. Nicholson—were left high and dry on the blocks at the other end.
All was confusion for a minute or two. but after the referee had conferred with team captains, agreement was reached on a re-swim. This, by contrast, was carried out with almost military precision —and everyone got wet. The Spreydon club confirmed its mastery in relay swimming by retaining all three trophies —the Hollander. Harris and Bryce Cups. G. R. Stringer. W Pearce, A. McDonald and Misses Nicholson and L. Cox Played Prominent parts in these victories and two veterans, P Harrow and N. Bota, alao gave yeoman service.
Strong Elmwood teams containing W. Williamson, the Hay brothers and A. N. McPhail provided good competition for Spreydon. Although it failed to win one of three trophv events, Elmwood scored three victories, including the senior medley race. The carnival ended in lighter vein when the Canterbury representative squad, bolstered by 1. Inclusion of its manager, Mr R w. Luscombe, and the champion woman diver, Miss H. Hutton, was beaten by half the length of the pool by the Rest in a 12-a-side event. Results were:— Bryce Cup (5 x 100 yards).— Spreydon A 1, Elmwood 2 Spreydon B 3. Time. 5:34.4.
