N.Z. CARPET
Possible Market In Hong Kong
The introduction of airconditioning into offices, hotels, and fiats in Hong Kong could lead to the export of more carpets, from New Zealand to the Crown colony, said Mr T. H. Mechen in Christchurch yesterday. “Wall-to-wall carpeting in Hong Kong is only practicable with air-conditioning. Without it, the wails and rooms sweat and the carpet rots," he said. The manager of the Christchurch branch of New Zealand Carpet Distributors. Ltd., a subsidiary of Felt and Textiles of New Zealand, Ltd., Mr Mechen, has just returned after supervising the start of the laying of Hi miles of carpet in the Hong Kong Hilton Hotel. The carpet was made in Ricca rton and Wellington. The hotel has 38 floors and 1000 bedrooms. It is the largest in the world outside America, and will be officially opened on April 15. Mr Mechen said that Chinese workers were laying the carpet In 40 bedrooms in four to five days. They knew nothing about carpetlaying when they started, but were very quick at picking up knowledge.
