Civil Aviation Training Centre At Harewood
From early next month all training connected with civil aviation in New Zealand will be given at Christchurch, when the Civil Aviation and Meteorological Grotlnd Services Training Centre comes into being. The Minister of Civil Aviation (Mr McAlpine) is expected to perform the opening ceremony. The cost of the project is about £lB,OOO. The training centre is located about 500 yards south-east of the main terminal building. It is housed in an existing airport building which has been refurnished and practically rebuilt internally. Consolidating all civil aviation training in one place will provide greater uniformity and standardisation along international lines. Since World War Two courses have been held where accommodation was available and much of the training had to be learned on the job. When the centre opens next month the scattered unite will be
brought together in a venture which will provide uniformity of training, and economy of training effort and equipment.
It is expected the centre will initially have an instructing staff of about 11. The courses will be small, averaging six to 10, so that more individual attention can be given. The training syllabus will be in accordance with that brought out by the International Civil Aviation Administration Organisation. The first courses in procedural and radar air traffic control are expected to begin on March 11.
