UNION OF CHURCHES
Prediction By Priest (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Feb. 15. Union of the Roman Catholic and the eastern orthodox churches will come about, but it will take time, a visiting eastern rite priest predicted today.
He is Monsignor Michel Bardouil, pastor of St. Anne Melkite Church, Los Angeles, who holds the rank of archimandrite, equivalent to abbot in monastic orders.
The Melkite sect, centred in Lebanon, is an autonomous branch of the Byzantine rite which, unlike the Greek and Russian Orthodox churches, recognises the primacy of the Pope. At the recent Ecumenical Council in Rome, 135 bishops of the Byzantine rite took part, and the Melkite patriarch was most prominent in advocating union between the churches. Monsignor Bardoui] said.
