Bus Patrons Advised To Travel Early

Christchurch Transport Board buses would be busy at the week-end, with extra services running to cope with the crowds expected to see the Royal visitors, and it was inevitable that there would be some disruption of services, Mr J. F. Fardell, the board’s general manager, said yesterday. While the Royal party was travelling along bus routes detours would have to be made, he said. The buses would take the roads nearest to the normal route until the Royal party had passed, after which there would be normal running.

Because the zone in Cathedral square in front of the United Service Hotel would be closed, some bus services would have to be moved during the week-end, he said.

The Bryndwr service would depart from Woodward’s zone and run via Gloucester street. The Somerfleld, Riccarton,

Templeton and Creyke road services would be moved to Hereford street and depart from a temporary stop outside McKenzie and Willis, Ltd. “Travel early if possible,” was Mr FardeH’s advice to those using buses to go to Lancaster Park for the <?lvic welcome and to Riccarton for the Royal race meeting. Saturday services would run as normal, he said, and would be augmented where possible. There would be additional trips from Locksley avenue, Fo-vant street, Northcote, Shirley and HeiHei.

As there would be a heavy call on the board’s fleet to move schoolchildren to Lancaster Park there would be fewer vehicles to augment the public services, he said, so the public should travel early and realise that there might be some delays. To avoid disappointment, those travelling to Lancaster Park should go without prams if possible, for there would be limited accommodation for them, he said. A special bus service would run from Woodward’s corner in the Square to Lancaster Park from 8.30 am. Special race buses would leave from the Avon Theatre stop in Worcester street from 11 am., he said. The last buses tomorrow

night would leave the Square at 11 p.m. There would be additional early morning trips on Sunday, Mr Fardel! said. In addition, the normal church trips arriving in the Square at 10.45 am. would run and be augmented as necessary.

After-church buses would leave the Square at 12.30 pm. and be augmented if necessary.

A special service would leave from Gloucester street, near . the Colombo street corner, commencing at 1.30 p.m. and run to Ro-Heaton avenue, for those who wanted to go to the Botanic Gardens. The normal last buses on Sunday would leave the Square at 10 pm. on the usual routes, and in addition there would be extra trips leaving at 10.40 p.m., Mr Fardel! said.
