A Question Of Taste

Sir, —I desire to register the strongest possible protest against the publication of the photograph of Her Majesty which appears on the top left corner of page 14 of today’s issue. This protest is on two grounds: (1) The Queen is a noble example of true womanhood. Womanly modesty is one of her outstanding traits. The picture fails to honour thus feature. (2) It is an offence to the dignity of her Regal and Gracious Majesty. These two traits have always been honoured by ail loyal citizens of our fair city. The publishing of this unavoidable incident is not in keeping with the characteristic good taste of your excellent paper. It would be appropriate to tender a humble apology to Her Majesty and the Duke, her husband.— Yours, etc.,

C. L. PURDIE. February 13, 1963.

Sir, —For heaven’s sake show a bit more taste! Her Majesty, fighting her skirts in Windy Wellington, is hardly a fit subject for regal coverage in a respectable publication.—Yours, etc., BREAK IT DOWN.

February 13, 1963. [Our respect and affection for Her Majesty are no less, and no less sincere, than our correspondents’; and we should not have printed the picture if we had thought it would arouse any feeling of disrespect. We do not think we were mistaken in believing that the only feeling it aroused in the great majority of our readers was the warm fellow-feeling of those who share a common experience, even if it is no more than a fleeting moment of embarrassment.—Ed., “The Press.”]
