Manapouri Power Scheme
Sir,—Your criticism of the proposed hydro programme for the southern lakes does not go far enough. Hydroelectric generation in New Zealand is the “golden calf’ which all governments worship. Profligate spending thereto is one cause of the rapacity of the Inland Revenue Department. Speculative enterprise for problematical consumption of electricity by an aluminium project, when production of that metal, present and planned, is world-wide in excess of consumption, is crazy. Individual New Zealanders could well do with the money in their pockets instead of wasting it on that senseless scheme. I say to the Government, give our individual enterprise a chance by taxing us less, and put the credit squeeze on that crazy idea and drop it into the bottom of the lake.—Yours, etc., FED UP. February 13,1963.
