SYDNEY, February 13. A destitute mother who abandoned her two babies in a church presbytery on Monday hugged them yesterday and vowed never to part with them again. About the same time, a “fairy godfather” flew into Sydney ready to spend £lOOO on the family to . help the mother—22-year-old Mrs Helen Swain—keep her vow.
Mrs Swain was reunited with her children—Diana, aged 4, and Janice, aged 18
months—after a Magistrate dismissed charges that she bad neglected them and had not provided adequate care and accommodation. Left Note - On Monday night she left them in the presbytery with a note which read: “I am not doing this because I want to ... I have nowhere to live, no means of support for them ... I will know they will be in good hands when I leave them with you ... I am desperate.” > Yesterday the “fairy godfather”—a wealthy Central West orchardist, who wants to be anonymous—flew to Sydney prepared to spend £lOOO to help reunite the family and keep it together.
Mrs Swain explained: “I am expecting another baby and I thought it was going to be born early.
“I have not got any money; my husband’s in gaol; Im sick and I can give my children nothing.”
