OBSERVATORY SITE

Tests Nearing End A 30-monith investigation into the best site tor an astronomical observatory in New Zealand for the University of Pennsylvania should be finished by June 30, the investigator, Mr F. M. Bateson, said yesterday. Mir Bateson is at present investigating a site ait Mount John, near Tekapo. He has already investigated sites on the Black Birch Range (south of Blenheim), and near Nelson city, and last month opened a station at the Manorbum Dam, Central Otago. Meteorological observations are still being maintained at Black Birch for compairison

with other sites. As tiie preliminairy investigations at Mount John looked promising, an eight-inch refracting telescope had recently been installed there for testing the site by more precise methods, Mr Bateson said.
