CHILDREN IN CARS
Seats In Rear Urged Stronger measures to safeguard children seated or standing against windscreens of motor vehicles were urged by delegates at the interprovincial conference of the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers of New Zealand, which was held in Ashburton yesterday. Some delegates said it was more the responsibility of parents than the Transport Department to combat the danger. Mrs E. George, of the North Canterbury branch, quoted incidents of children travelling in vehicles too close to the windscreen. She said children should be safely placed in the rear seats of cars.
More than 250 delegates from 70 branches from Hurunui to Waimate attended the conference. After an address of welcome by the Mid-Canterbury provincial president (Mrs R. Thomas), the conference was officially opened by the deputy-Mayor of Ashburton (Mr D. O. Digby). Delegates decided that the venue for next year’s conference would be Hamner Springs.
