Good Display At Gisborne
(N.Z. Press Association) GISBORNE, Feb. 11. A gallery of 700 spectators this afternoon watched an exciting, four-hour display of courtcraft and power tennis by a section of the team of overseas and New Zealand players who had appeared at Auckland at the week-end.
The Gisborne grass courts were fast for today's play, the feature of which was the defeat of the Wimbledon doubles champions, F. Stolle and B. Hewitt, of Australia. Play was at times handicapped by high wind. Results:—
Men's Singles.—l. Crookenden (N.Z.) beat R. Hewitt (Australia), 8-2, 5-6 (unfinished); F. Stolle (Australia) beat K. Fletcher (Australia), 6-3, 8-3. Women’s Singles.—Miss E. Starkie (England) beat Miss L. Tumey (Australia), 6-2, 6-4. Men s Doubles.—K. Fletcher (Australia) and I. Crookenden (N.Z.) beat Stolle and B. Hewitt (Australia), 8-3, 8-6. Mixed Doubles.—K. Fletcher and Miss Starkie beat Stolle and Miss Turner, 6-3.
