Women’s Bowls Three Easy Victories For Current Pairs Champions

Forty-two teams came through the first day without loss when the New Zealand women’s pairs bowls championship began in Christchurch yesterday. Among those successful were the winners at Hamilton last year, Miss de Ath and her lead, Miss E. Hughes (Hawera).

The 254 competitors had to contend with a light drizzle and overcast skies. Three rounds were played on 18 greens. Miss de Ath. and Miss Hughes were untroubled in all three matches yesterday, and their lowest winning margin was seven.

First honours for the highest score went to Mrs F. Dolle (Lower Hutt) when she trounced the prominent Woolston skip, Mrs A. Sinclair, 41-9. This record stood until the third round when Mrs I. Smith (Kia Toa) jolted Mrs J. Jones (Christchurch) with a 42-14 victory. Scores of 30 and more were quite common throughout the day. Mirs Nicol (Mangakino), who skipped the winning pair in 1967, 1958, and 1959, lost her first game to Mrs G. Smith (Spreydon) but won the next two. Mrs McLachlan (Riverton), who won the singles on Wednesday, only managed to win her first game by one point but went down in her next to Mrs D. Pierson (Marewa), 15-17. She had little difficulty in winning her third game, 26-19, against Mrs R. Smith (Kia Toa). Mrs W. Child, runner-up in the singles, has also lost one game. Another three rounds will be played today and all pairs with four or more wins will go through to postsection play. Results were:— SECTION 1 Burwood Green First Round.—Mrs Gibbs (Lincoln) 20.
