Back To School Means Cut Lunches Again
(From Our Grocery Correspondent)
With the reopening of schools this week mothers are once again faced with the daily problem of fillings for cut lunches. Grocers are helping, offering suggestions by special displays of meat pastes, peanut butter, vegetable spreads, many different kinds of cheese and individual packs of raisins and sultanas.
The grocery trade looks on this time of the year as a settling down period and it is generally accepted as a quiet trading time.
Canned Pineapple. New prices were recently announced for the new season's pack of South African pineapple. All the usual sizes and cuts were quoted, apart from 8 ounce packs. In recent years large quantities of pineapple have been imported into New Zealand from South Africa, mainly because of price preference. The latest prices are in line with those quoted last July.
Russian Fish.—Russian crabmeat and salmon was offered for sale in New Zealand a short time ago, but not much was available. Russian salmon has always been of good quality, but it is usually dearer than Japanese. At present most importers have used their licences, so it is not likely that much Russian fish will be seen on the local market at present.
Tuna.—Tuna catches being made off the East Coast of the North Island are being watched with interest. More and larger catches are being made and J. Wattle Canneries now have a boat for tuna fishing. When Watties start canning tuna for the local market there should be a good demand for it.
Preserving.—Home preserving of fruits and vegetables is in
full swing Many home gardens have good crops and housewives are busy with bottling. Grocers have good supplies of bottles, salt, sugar and other preparations for bottling, pickling and scauce-making.
