The couple, Mir and Mrs R. T. Griffin, of 30 Takutai road, Buckflands Beach, informed ham that the scow hit their 14ft dinghy and caught the anchor chain—towing them about 400 yards before they were able to clamber on board.

The dinghy swung around to the side of the scow. “By standing on the gunwale of the dinghy we were able to find a footing on a ledge which ran around the scow,” said Mr Griffin.

Mrs Griffin cannot swim and the nearest land was about 350 yards away.
