Authorities Anxious (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Jan. 23. Large areas of State forest in the central North Island, Auckland and Nelson, representing nearly 700,000 acres of exotic timber, have dried out in the last 13 days of hot weather, and the danger of fire is “extreme.” This was reported today by Mr C. O. Bridgeman, Forest Service chief fire control officer.

Rain had promised to ease the situation, but tonight the Weather Office said falls are expected to be negligible. Mr Bridgeman said 'daylight watches and patrols were being maintained in the Kaingaroa and Rotorua forest areas. Day-long air reconnaissance was also being carried out.

Forests dangerously affected are Kaingaroa, Pureora, Waimihia and Murupara. Others in the Bay of Plenty and Northland areas are in an almost similar state. Rain was wanted urgently to avert possible disastrous outbreaks. Mr Bridgeman said. Wellington conservancy area, too, reports extremely dry conditions, but the danger in Southland, the West Coast Canterbury, and the Tasman ranges has diminished for the time being after rain fell on throe days this week
