HOSPITAL CHIEF

Two to Replace Dr. Morton After Dr. T. Morton retires as medical superintendent-in-chief of the North Canterbury Hospital Board and medical superintendent of the Christchurch Hospital, two men will eventually be appointed to cover his duties, the chairman of the board (Dr. L. C. L. Averill) announced yesterday. Dr. Morton will retire on March 31. Although Initially only one appointment will be advertised, the board will confer with the appointee soon after he arrives and will then advertise for an assistant, said Dr. Averill. Dr. Averill’s statement reads:— "Following discussions with the Health Department, the board has decided to advertise immediately in the United Kingdom. Australia, and New Zealand for a medical superintendent-in-chief who will replace Dr. Morton as the board’s chief medical administrative officer. "The medical superinten-dent-in-chief will be responsible for the efficient management of the whole of the board’s medical, nursing, and other services connected with the treatment of patients, in addition to the administration of the Christchurch Hospital. "To assist the situation, however, the board will shortly appoint a further senior medical administrative officer, whose designation and duties, both general and as affecting Christchurch Hospital, will be decided by the board after it has consulted with the new medical super-intendent-in-chief. “By this means, the board’s medical administration will be considerably strengthened, and greater time will be available to the officers to enable them to advise the board on the integration and development of its medical and allied services, the growth of which is at a critical stage."
