D. Shubert, the Australian Government Trade Commissioner in the South Island, and Mrs Shubart. Some 250 guests have been invited. January 3* woe first proclaimed a public holiday in the colony of New South Wales on January 28, 1838, the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the colony. There is some evidence that there was some celebration of the event earlier than that, and in fact a notice appeared in the “Sydney Gazette” of February 1, 1817, referring to an anniversary dinner party given by Governor Macquarie. The celebrations are now held in ail States of the Commonwealth of Australia, and a holiday is observed on the Monday after January 2* unless January 2* is itself a Monday.
