SCRUB FIRE WATCH
Some Burning Still (N.Z. Press Association) INVERCARGILL, Jan. 23. Gangs of 17 men, working on a roster system, will keep a watch on the no>vsmouldeririig Te Anau Downs scrub and forest fire until about the middle ot next week. Today scattered areas of scrub and about 10 acres of native bush were reported to be still burning, but well under control The fire could flare up again if the gales of Tuesday were to resume, Mr E. R. Blake, assistant conservator of forests for Southland, Mid today. The men fighting the fire are now mainly concerned with extinguishing “hot spots” in the bush, and with bulldozing tracks through the burnt scrub to enable heavy machines to get to the fire areas. ‘There is every possibility that we will kill it this time," said Mr Blake. “But we are not underestimating K." No rain fell in the fire area today but 0.55 in fell there on Tuesday night The senior forest ranger for Southland. Mr J. Lawn, flew over the -’evastated area this morning, and reported that the area burnt was probably about 2000 acres. However, men who have been fighting the blaze consider the burnt area to be nearer 5000 acres.
