WOMAN NOT IDENTIFIED

Body Found Last Week It has been established by the police that the unidentified woman, whose body was found floating in the Heathcote river early last Thursday afternoon, travelled on the 5 pun. Sumner bus on Tuesday. She boarded the bus at the High street stop, near the Majestic Theatre, and alighted at the stop near the Long street intersection. The driver of the bus has identified the clothing worn by the woman, and the body. Extensive police inquiries have failed to establish the identity at the woman, who is thought to have been in her late fifties, and the investigation is now being extended. The police have receive’ a good deal of information from the public in response to newspaper and radio appeals, and it has all been checked without success.

A senior police officer said yesterday that the police appreciated the co-operation of the public and are anxious to receive any further information which might assist in establishing the woman’s identity. Foul play is not suspected. The body was noticed floating in the river by some children, half a mile on the

Christchurch side of the Heathcote Anns Hotel about 1250 p.m. The woman was slim, had grey hair tinted auburn and was wearing a wedding ring, a white cardigan over a floral frock of pink roses on a black background, and nylon stockings Her upper dentures had a full gold tooth on the right side and a gold filling at the front.

Late on Friday the police found a pair of black nylon shoes and a teal blue overcoat, in the pocket of which was a pair of half-length nylon gloves. A black velour hat with a full trimming of black lace with imitation petals was also found.
