MIDGET CAR TOSSED

Driver Radiy Hurt (N.Z. Pres* Association) AUCKLAND, Jan. 20. A midget car driver, Vernon Davenport, of Astley avenue, New Lynn, is in the Auckland Hospital with a broken jaw, severe facial injuries, a possibly fractured skull, concussion and a badly gashed throat. The injuries resulted from a spectacular collision in the second three-quarter midget car handicap race ait the Western Springs Speedway on Saturday night. Mr Davenport is still unconscious and his condition is serious.

Davenport's car was tossed high in the air when another ear just tipped the rear wheel as he was correcting a minor slide. The car overturned, hurdling a bunch of cars lined across the track. Still upside down, and with Davenport hanging from the cockpit strapped in by his safety belt, the car fell across the front of a car which had veered on to the concrete cycling track to avoid the accident. The two cars—locked to-gether-continued along the concrete for about 30ft before stopping. In the final collision, Davenport’s head was caught between bis car and the concrete and he suffered hi* injuries on impact and as he was dragged along.
