Wellington 25 Off Ist Innings Lead

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, January 11.

Cricket became a winter game at the Basin Reserve today. Players muffled with extra sweaters and even extra trousers sought to combat a sweeping, icy southerly when the Plunket Shield match between Auckland and Wellington continued on its rain-restricted way.

The day’s play started again at 2.15 pm- and Auckland added 21 to its overnight 121 for eight. At stumps, Wellington was 118 for three. Wellington could have looked forward to a more comfortable position bad it been able to push toe score along sufficiently to guarantee itself first innings points

before stumps. With Wellington’s weather in its current perverse mood anything might happen and toe game even yet be washed out. A more punishing role might have been adopted by toe batsmen after toe first wicket fell even conceding some finely controlled spin bowling by J. M. Mclntyre and J. T. Sparling. The match so far has been notable for toe bowlang of J. R. Reid, toe brilliance of toe catching, and two firstclass batting performances. Reid Seven Wickets

Reid rounded off his emergence from virtual bowling retirement by finishing with seven for 29 off 30 overs. A statistic bordering on fantasy is that from toe 180 hnii« be bowled only 18 scoring strokes were played. The catching developed yet another exhilarating stage today. Following those taken by B. A. G. Murray, G. P Bilby. and B. D. Morrison on toe first day, R. W. Blair and B. Howarth Joined the party. The batting came first from the Auckland left-hander, J. G. Kemp, and then from the Wellington opener, Murray. Kemp continued at 26 not out today and moved on to 45. He showed he is a bateman with genuinely broad stroke equipment. Murray's was a convincing performance and be played Me* Intyre intelligently. Survived Chance Bitoy survived a chance on 12. Hie 24 rune were part of a Wellington opening of 52. But Barton was seldom comfortable against Mclntyre and Sparling. Reid and B. W. Stadafr wfil set toe wheels in motion tomorrow morning.

Mclntyre’s bowling was deadly accurate with only toe odd exception. Sparling set a bristling field for McIntyre till well on toward stumps, and himself helped to peg Wellington down. Scores: —
