TIMARU, Jan. 9. With a lead of two matches to one in the doubles section, South Island appeared to have the edge on the touting Australian croquet team at Tlamru, but a slump In the singles play yesterday afternoon and today gave the Australians the "rubber" by five matches to three, with one not completed when play ended this afternoon. The final singles match was even in games, but Mrs Day (Australia) was leading E. Trainor (South Island) in the vital third when play ended. Matches decided today were: P. Rudolph (South Island) beat Mrs M. Harrison, 26-20, 26-22; Mrs C. H. Cathcart (Australia) beat Mrs E. Todd, 26-15, 11-26, 26-5.
