Croquet LACK OF SPACE
500 Players In England
(N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, January 9Town and country planning in England, and especially London, had been detrimental to croquet which was now struggling as a sport through lack of space. There were only 500 to 600 players In England. "In spite of this, our standard is still high," Mr E. P. C. Cotter, the school teacher captain of the English croquet team at present in Dunedin, said today. The New Zealand team in England in 1956, representing more than 6000 players, was beaten, 5-0, in the tests for the Macrobertson Trophy. “But we are not over-con-fident,” Mr Cotter said. “We will not know our chances until at least one test is played. "Your greens are much different to ours. The grass is coarser, and the different texture will take some getting used to.”
Both Australia and New Zealand will try to take the Macrobertson Trophy from England this year. The teams will meet three times in different centres.
