KIRWEE FIREFIGHTING
Brigade May Be Formed
The unusually large spring growth in the Kirwee district, and the attendent fire danger, have moved residents to consider setting up a voluntary fire brigade in the area. To this end a meeting was held at Kirwee, and a committee was set up to further arrangements.
A spokesman for the committee said present arrangements were not entirely satisfactory should a major blaze break out in Kirwee. There is a volunteer fire brigade in Darfleld, but this is five miles from Kirwee. Sparks from the railway were a major hazard and, once a blaze had started in the area, it would very quickly sweep along in the present conditions, said the spokesman. The Kirwee organisers envisage a chain of volunteer brigades to cover the Sheffield, Darfleld, Kirwee and Hororata areas. Speakers at the meeting included Mr T. Holland, who has been connected with the Darfleld brigade for many years, and Mr M. E. Jenkins, chairman of the Malvern County Council.
