TEACHERS’ HOSTELS
Govt. Decision Welcomed (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. December 17. The Government's decision to build teachers’ college hostels is welcomed by the New Zealand Educational Institute. “We agree with the Minister of Educaition (Mr Tennent) that action cannot be postponed any longer,” said the president (Mr W. R. Familton) today. It had been evident for many years that parents were reluctant to let children, particularly daughters, who had just left school, attend teachers’ colleges which had no properly supervised hostels. Private board, even when good in other respects, did not always provide satisfactory conditions for study. “We know that lack of hostels has seriously reduced the number of recruits from provincial centres, particularly when other services such as the Health Department have been able to advertise pleasant hostels as one of their attractions," said Mr Familton. When there were more school leavers to choose from, the training colleges could be sure of better students, thus leading to higher standards throughout the profession. This was in line with the institute's policy for a revaluation of educaition and higher professional status for teachers.
