CONTROL OF WAIKATO

Cost Tribunal Suggested (NZ. Press Association) HAMILTON, December 14. As a way out of the stalemate on financing works to control the Waikato river, the Minister of Works (Mr Goosman) today asked the constituent members of the Waikato Valley Authority to agree to the setting up of a special tribunal. They have until the end of January to decide. This tribunal of three would investigate the financial implications of the scheme, which will cost in the vicinity of £3 million. It was recognised, said the Minister, after the meeting in committee, that the land to be protected could not carry the burden of that amount. A tribunal could examine the whole position, ascertain the facts concerning the deterioration of the river, and apportion the costs to where the responsibility lay. Both the Government and the Waikato Valley Authority would have to agree to accept the tribunal’s decision.
