40 Years Is Enough, Says Lord Boothby
(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.)
LONDON, Dec. 13. “Forty years is enough—never again in Britain will I speak in public,” Lord Boothby, member of Parliament for Aberdeen East for 24 years until 1958, told Kent farmers. “I have been haranguing
the people of this country in vain. It has not had the slightest effect. “The fact that I have always been right and they
have always been wrong isn’t adequate compensation for all this failure. Of course if I were compelled by anger I might address their Lordships in the House of Lords. And my self-denying ordinance doesn’t apply to television—where they pay you.” Lord Boothby later told the “Daily Mail”: “It’s final, fixed, and finished. “Never again will my lovely mellifluous tones be heard. I’ve told my last funny story—and I must say they laughed quite a lot—and I’ve had it. Who’ll take my place? Nobody. It’s just going to leave one of those enormous gaps in British life. It may be sad but I’m in a state of delight. “I won’t regret it for a flashing second.”
