ESCAPE TO POLITICS?
Idea Catches On Fast (N.ZP. A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, December 11. British soldiers in Germany were reported today to be putting their names down for the popular “Parliamentary” escape route to civilian life. About 200 servicemen so far have applied for nomination papers in two by-elec-tions to be held in the spring in the Yorkshire constituencies of Rotherham and Colne Valley. Colne Valley had another 10 today bringing its total to 68. About 65 applicants are believed to be from servicemen, including some in Germany.
Rotherham had 185 applications until last Friday when the returning officer refused to issue any more figures for a week. r
A military regulation says a man wishing to stand for Parliament must be released from the service. Servicemen have now found that the regulations do not say the man actually has to stand to be released, only he intends to stand.
The idea has caught on fast and the number of service applications is increasing daily, Reuters said.
