LYTTELTON CARGO

Effect Of Aramoana

Figures prepared by the Waterfront Industry Commission in September, showed that the rail-ferry Aramoana had taken 11,642 tons of cargo from Lyttelton, said the chairman (Mr A. A. Macfarlane) to the Lyttelton Harbour Board yesterday. At the same time, coastal trade had increased by 40,000 tons, so the Aramoana was making trade, he said. Cargo handled at Lyttelton last month was down again, compared with the tonnage for November last year. The tonnage was 101,785, compared with 145,976. Imports, at 74,875 tons, showed a drop of 26.412, and exports were 26,910 tons, compared with 44.689 in November a year ago.

For the two months of the financial year cargo has amounted to 188.420 tons, compared with 220,836 a year ago.

During the month there were 78 ships in port with a total net register tonnage of 253,484. Last November, 153 ships with a combined tonnage of 408.236. entered the port. Mr A. L. Burk, the secre-tary-manager, said the “two months” were only seven weeks this year, compared with eight last year.
