SHIFT WORK ON DREDGE
Proposal To Crews
The dredge Canterbury was uneconomic: it should be sold and the new dredge Peraki worked on double shift, said Mr W. B Laing to the Lyttelton Harbour Board yesterday The board agreed to approach the engineers and crews of the dredges to see their attitude to shift work It was said that both crews could be used on the Peraki. with shifts being worked week about "With the number of weeks she is tied up for overhaul and the expense involved, the Canterbury is becoming uneconomic." said Mr Laing "Surely we could switch our engineers from the Canterbury to the Peraki “The chief engineer has said before that the engineers would rather go back to sea than work shifts, but I am hanged if I can see that " The Peraki. a new ship, was capable of working 24 hours a day. he said. "She is lifting mud, not just heavy water like the Canterbury.” An approach would be made to the crew of the Canterbury, said the chairman (Mr A. A. Macfarlane) Mr L. G. Amos: I was assured in the staff committee that this was not practicable Mr Macfarlane: It might be worth trying again. "There is a lot of stuff to be shifted before we can use the new wharves and it is only logical that we should make full use of the efficient dredge.” said Mr W. P. Glue.
