MEETING OF I.L.O.

Ideologies Intrude

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE, December 4

Two American delegates yesterday accused Russia of using the Asian regional conference of the International Labour Organisation as a propaganda platform. Their attacks reflected the growing tension among the 18 nations attending the conference in Melbourne over the intrusion of political issues into their discussions. Last week several Asian delegates attacked “international Communism” and accused Communist China of “repressing the workers.” The Russian delegate, Mr Vassilenko, described United States foreign aid as “exploitation” and claimed that Communist China should have been represented at the conference. The United States Government delegate, Mr Delaney, told delegates yesterday: “The U.S.S.R. has used this rostrum as a propaganda platform to repeat worn-out accusations and inaccurate statements designed to delude us.

"It would be an insult to your intelligence to speak as if you were taken in by his remarks,” he said. Mr Delaney said that, since 1945, America had spent 90 million dollars in aid to the developing Asian nations. Mr Delaney said that the director-general of 1.L.0., Mr Morse, had used misleading Communist Chinese economic statistics in his report.
