MAORI LAND TITLES
Amalgamation In Taranaki (NZ. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 30. New procedures for the progressive amalgamation of uneconomic fragmented Maori land titles in Taranaki are provided in the Maori Purposes Bill, introduced in Parliament today. The legislation affects ■what are known as the West Coast settlement reserves, totalling 71.643 acres. There are 211 separate grants or titles and about 7500 individual owners. But since most owners appear on an average in six of the grants, the total number of owners in all grants is more than 40,000. At the request of representatives of the beneficial owners, the legislation provides that: (1) The titles to ail the grants be amalgamated so that in future there will be only one title for all the lands.
(2) Any interest which on amalgamation does not exceed £lO and is, therefore, in terms of the bill, “uneconomic” will be vested in the Taranaki Maori Trust Board for education purposes. (3) In future, all interests which on the death of owners would become uneconomic in the hands of successors, will similarly be vested in the trust board for the same purpose.
