SHIP’S HULL PIERCED

Hit Shelf In Harbour

(N.Z. Press Assn.— Copyright) SYDNEY, November 30 The freighter Lake Eyre (10.000 tons) struck a rock shelf and ran aground in Newcastle Harbour today. Both walls of the ship’s hu’l were holed and water gushed into its forard compartments The Lake Eyre struck the self at high tide, and was shipping 4ft of water an hour as the tide began to drop Harbour authorities used four tugs in a desperate attempt to move the ship before the falling tide made the job impossible. Two of the tugs pulled on cables attached to the Lake Eyre’s stem while the other two pushed from the bow. The operation failed when a line to the tug, Heroic, parted and became entangled in the ship's propellers. The Lake Eyre is loaded with a full cargo of iron ore from Whyalla, on delivery to Broken Hill Proprietary, in Newcastle. The ship’s cargo might have to be unloaded if other attempts to refloat it failed. Another freighter, the Lake Illawarra, ran aground in the same spot a year ago. In its present position, the Lake Eyre is blocking the main harbour channel.
