DESERTED TEZPUR

Tea Planters Return (N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) NEW DELHI, Nov. 25. British tea garden managers evacuated on Tuesday from the direct line of Chinese advance have returned to their estates near Tezpur, Assam, according to reports reaching New Delhi. About 600 Britons, mostly women and children, but including a few managers whose estates were threatened by the Chinese advance, were evacuated to Calcutta. The women and children will remain there or fly to England until the border crisis passes. The town of Tezpur itself still appears deserted, in spite of the gradual return of refugees, reports says. Goats, cattle and dogs roam through the town, nibbling at piles of refuse which have accumulated in the streets with the breakdown of the civil administration. Food is still scarce and returning villagers are busy chasing stray cattle out of trampled rioefields outside the town.
