CITY COUNCIL NEWS IN BRIEF
A request for three new taxi stands, each for two cars, was declined by the City Council last evening. The stands sought were outside the High street Post Office, Lichfield street near Mason Struthers’ corner and Tuam street opposite Millers Ltd. The sites were in busy shopping sections and the existing kerbside parking spaces were more beneficial to the general public than the alternative use of taxi stands, the traffic committee said.
Traffic Lights. The delivery of traffic lights for the Carlton Mill road-Bealey avenue and Ferry roadMoorhouse aveune intersections is expected to begin in May or June. Meanwhile I the council will proceed with road reconstruction and traffic islands at the Carlton Mill corner.
Royal Visit. A special committee was appointed to deal with details of the Royal visit to the city in February. Picture Purchases. A painting of the Pink and White Terraces by the early New Zealand artist, J. C. Hoyte, was bought for the city collection at £6O. Another picture bought was a water colour of Mount Sefton by Margaret Stoddart, the price being £3O.
Traffic Problems. — The traffic committee faces a busy New Year. An evening meeting is being held early in the new year to consider the cost of traffic control at sports fixtures, parking restrictions, meter cards, feeding of meters, unilateral parking, taxi-cab enforcement and the method of dealing with parking offences. Outward Bound. The Town Clerk (Mr C. S. Bowie) was asked to selected a member of the staff to attend a course at the Outward Bound Trust's school. As a donor to the Cobham School, the council was given priority in sponsoring a candidate. Traffic Cadets.— The council confirmed the traffic committee's action in advertising for five cadets for the traffic officers’ staff.
Drinking Fountain. The council accepted an offer by Mr T. M. Wilkins, a son of the late Mr W. E. Wilkins, a New Brighton borough councillor, to provide about £lOO towards the cost of a drinking fountain on the New Brighton foreshore. Summit Road.— The council agreed to the Christchurch Regional Planning Authority taking over the administration of the preservation of the Summit road as a scenic amenity.
