GIFTS WENT TO NEEDY
Bank Officers’ Wives’ Party Christchurch bank officers' wives have taken the initiative this year in the spirit of Christmas giving. At a recent combined Christmas party, members left gifts for persons being looked after In their own homes by local welfare organisations. Previously, the practice at annual parties has been to exchange gifts among themeelves. Groups participating in the party, held ait the National Party clubrooms, were bank officers’ wives’ clubs of the Bank of New Zealand, the Australia and New Zealand Bank, and the Commercial Bank of Australia. It was the first time such a combined function had been held.
Each group presented comedy sketches in costume Carol singing by candlelight was led by choristers dressed as angels. The presidents of the associations welcomed guests. They were Mesdames R. C, O’Halloran (8.N.Z.), H. Gyde (A.N.Z.), and E. K. Buxbury (Commercial Bank). More than 100 persons attended. Mrs T. Down was the compere.
Girls’ Debating.—" That New Zealand women should take a more active part in public affaire," was the subject of the final debating contest held recently by the Christchurch District Committee of Country Girls' Clubs. The Darfield team, which won with 288 marks, comprised Misses Elaine Hart, Margaret Hawke and Elaine Robertson. The Ellesmere team, in second place, comprised Misses Dois Gilbert. Marton McLaughlin, and Ruth Manson. The award for top speaker went to Miss Robertson. After the contest the leader of the winning team (Miss Hart) was presented with the Bank of New South Wales Trophy, and the judge (Mr D. Waghorn), congratulated both teams. The chairman was Mrs H. R. Jenkins and the time-keeper, Miss Janet Sadler.
