£l000 GRANT TO KOREANS

Mission To Lepers Thanked Warm appreciation of the grant by the New Zealand Mission to Lepers of £lOOO has been expressed by Mr C, W. Morrison, of the Korea Church World Service on behalf of the hundreds of sufferers who will benefit as a result of the gift. Mr Morrison proposes setting up a special rehabilitation and prosthetic surgery unit under an American specialist, Mr J. Steensma. After the fitting of artificial lambs patients will be trained for trades and other occupations.

The programme will be associated with several commercial and agricultural projects by which the Mission to Lepers and co-operating missions are providing “sheltered occupations” for cured and discharged leprosy sufferers. Typical of these is the community for . almost 400 patients established on 290 acres of mountain land near Soonchun, with the backing of the Mission to Lepers and Church World Service.

It is hoped that the resettled families will become self-supporting. Each will have its own farm, livestock and implements. It will be linked with the R. M. Wilson leprosarium near Soonchun, one of the largest in Korea.
