FORESTRY MISTAKES
Soil Types Unsuitable
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 20. “Extremely costly mistake* made in New Zealand have wrecked forest companies, and caused heavy financial loro to investor*--all because the soil types were not suited to the tree* planted. “They had not taken the trouble to relate the soil* and the tree species.” said Mr A. L. Poole, Director-General of Forests, in a supplied statement today. Mr Foote explained that when agricultural experts made mistakes they could usually rectify them next season, but a forestry error in relation to soil types might take years, even a lifetime, to repair. Recalling notable forestry mistakes, Mr Poole said: “Right at the doorstep of the Tasman enterprise there should be a forest yielding timber for a company, now, almost forgotten. “It was the Redwood Forest Company, which planted several thousand acres. The whole enterprise ended in disaster all becauase they did not bother to relate the species planted to the soil types.”
