U.N. Contacts Urged (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) NEW YORK, November 17. Australia joined Canada today in calling for continued contacts between the United Nations and South Africa to help bring South-west Africa peacefully to self-determina-tion.

The Australian delegate in the United Nations Trusteeship Committee, Mr L. R. Mclntyre, said that the visit this year to South Africa and the mandated territory of South-west Africa by representatives of the South-west Africa committee had been “by no means abortive.” “It should encourage us to redouble our efforts towards maintaining some sort of dialogue with the South African Government on this matter,” he said.

Mr Mclntyre also called on South Africa to grant travel permits to students who had won scholarships in other countries. It was not sufficient to say adequate educational opportunities existed at home.

“We can only put squarely to the South African Government once again that its continued failure to recognise its obligations and the overwhelming strength of world opinion can ultimately have the most explosive consequences,” the Australian delegate said. Mr Jean-Louis de I’lsle, of Canada, said South Africa’s “elevation of racial discrimination into a political, social and philosophical system is completely unacceptable to the people of my country.”
