CIVIL DEFENCE CONFERENCE

Mr Gotz To Open Lincoln Talks

The first section of the annual study conference of civil defence controllers will be opened by the Minister of Civil Defence (Mr Gotz) at Lincoln College this morning. Last evening 61 controllers and representatives from local bodies north of the Waitaki river arrived at Lincoln College, where they will stay until the conference ends on Thursday. The second section of the course, for controllers from areas south of the Waitaki. will start next Tuesday. About 53 persons will attend this course, which will also be held at the college. The aim of the conference is to bring controllers and representatives of Government departments up to date in aspects of civil defence and to assist them to develop their local planning. The main theme will be an extension of last year's discussions, and will deal with the proble. 3 of receiving large numbers of evacuees and civil defence in rural areas.

Today's programme will include demonstrations of evacuation procedures and the handling of casualties, the improvising of equipment and the setting up of forward medical aid posts. There will be discussions on civil defence in rural areas and a general discussion in the evening. Tomorrow there will be discussions on radiological aspects of civil defence and the reception of evacuees. On Thursday there will also be discussions on the reception of evacuees, and the conference will end at midday.
